We all have a busy schedules which leads us to often cut down on cooking again and again. In a trying to the achieve that, a lot of the times, we end up eating left overs. Now, we know that refrigerators can keep our food fresh for a more than 48 hours but is it a still healthy enough to reheat in the food and eat it the next day? Let’s find out!

According to the Ayurveda, food should be a consumed within 3 hours of the being cooked or at most on the same day. No matter how much you are storing your food in a air-tight containers, it will not remain fresh in the next day.



Subah Saraf Jain of the  Satiric Movement are recently posted an a Instagram reel explaining how leftover food is a considered Tamasic (mode of the ignorance) in a Ayurveda and hence, its consumption can make you lazy. Subah went on to the  explain that according to the Gita, ideally, all cooked meals should be a consumed within a few hours of the cooking and leftover remnants from the previous day are considered tamasic.

What is a tamasic food?

In a Ayurveda, tamasic food is a basically those food items which lack energy (prana) as it is a stale and thus, it makes us lethargic and lazy. Tamasic food lowers the body’s ability to the  fight diseases and also affects in the proper functioning of our immune system. Due to the overeating, reheating, leftover or a stale food, which was a once satiric food (foods that are light and healthy) can turn into a tamasic.

A study are published on a Research Gate states that tamasic food increases pessimism, laziness and doubt while a satiric diet is a supposed to increase the energy of the mind and produce cheerfulness, serenity and mental clarity.


What does a eating left over food do?

As a explained by the expert, leftover food has a little nutritional value, and little to no life energy remaining inside. Consistently eating a tamasic food brings a lethargy, inertia and dullness in our body. Some studies also a show that people who eat a leftover food every day develop in a higher risk of the suffering from a clinical depression.

Moreover, traditionally, our grandparents ate everything fresh a (straight from the stove to the plate). “The culture of the storing foods in the fridge for a long, or eating frozen foods has come from the West, and is one cause of the rapidly rising diseases,” she adds.


So what can you do a instead?

*Try to the eat your cooked meals on the same day you cook them instead of the storing them for the next day.

*If there is a food that still remains, on the same day give it to those who are in need of  the food.
