Kali Chaudhash:

One day before Diwali, the festival of Kali Chaudhash is celebrated, also known as Narak Chaudhash or Little Diwali. It is believed that lighting a lamp by bowing to Yamaraj on this day brings liberation from all kinds of troubles and sins. The lamp for Yama is lit on the day of Kali Chaudhash before Diwali. The festival is also associated with Narakasur and Raja Bali. This time the feast is starting on Wednesday, November 3, after 9.03am. According to the Puranas, one should wake up before sunrise on this day and take a bath by applying Ubatan, oil etc.

Ubatan and herbal baths
On the day of Kali Chaudhash, one should wake up before sunrise and massage sesame or fern oil on the body. Ubatan made from herbs should be applied. Then take a bath with two drops of Ganga water and Apamarg leaves in water. Then one should have darshan of Lord Vishnu and Lord Krishna. Doing so increases age and beauty, removes sin.

The slaying of Narakasur
The Vishnupurana tells the story of the slaying of Narakasur. In the Dwapar era, Bhumi Devi gave birth to a cruel son. Being an asura, he got the name Narakasur. He became the king of Pragjyotishpur. He greatly disturbed the gods and humans. Sixteen thousand nymphs were captured by Narakasur. After hearing the prayers of Indra, Lord Krishna invaded the city of the tyrant Narakasur. In battle he killed monsters like Moore, Hayagriva and Panchjan while Narakasur invaded in the form of an elephant. Lord Krishna killed Narakasur on the fourteenth day of this month's Vad Paksha. The nymphs and others were then released from captivity. That is why this festival is celebrated, hence the name of this festival is Narak Chaudhash.
