According to reports, the fire started in a pipeline under the sea. Which connects Pemax's Ku Malub Jap with the platform of Jap Oil Development. Ku Malub Jap is located on the southern shore of the Gulf of Mexico. Pemax says no one was injured in the incident and production was not affected by the project due to a gas leak.

The fire started at 5.15am local time on Friday and was contained at 10.30am, the company said. Pemax said the company would investigate the cause of the fire. Pemax has a long record of major industrial accidents at its facilities. The 12-inch-diameter pipeline valves were reportedly shut down following the fire.
