On the festival of Mahashivaratri, on Makarsankrati, on the day of Amas, thousands of devotees reach here.
The Shivling is so high that one has to climb on top of the jaldhari and be anointed
The 1000 year old Bhagwan Matangeshwar temple located in Khajuraho city in Chhatarpur district of Madhya Pradesh is the center of faith in the Bundelkhand region. The Shivling is installed inside a huge temple located next to the west temple complex.
In the sanctum sanctorum of the temple, there is a 9-foot-high Shivling above a 6-foot-high reservoir. The higher the Shivling, the lower the shape.
It is said that this Shivling grows as much as rice pulses every year
The temple was built a thousand years ago by the Chandel kings in the 9th century. To anoint the Shivling, devotees have to climb a 6 feet high water tank, after which the Shivling is anointed.
On the festival of Mahashivaratri, on Makar Sankranti, on Amas, thousands of devotees arrive here. Special preparations are underway in the temple under Mahashivaratri.
Jaan will be laid to rest in the town for the marriage of Shiva Parvati. All the wedding rituals will be completed in the Matangeshwar temple.
According to the popular mythology of the construction of Shiva temple , this temple has been built on a special gem. Which is the reason for its being miraculous. This gem was provided by Lord Shiva himself to Emperor Yudhisthira. Which fulfilled every psychic desire. Later, while retiring, Yudhisthira donated Matang to the sage.
This gem from the sage Matang came to King Harshavarman of Chandal in Bundelkhand. Who for the welfare of the people pressed this gem down to earth and built the Matangeshwar temple at that place. It is because of this gem that fulfills the desires of all that the desires of the minds of everyone who comes here are fulfilled. The temple was named Matangeshwar because of the sage Matangeshwar.
