12.06 lakh new members joined the Employees Insurance Corporation (ESIC) managed social security scheme in December 2020. Earlier, 9.48 lakh shareholders had joined in November.

The figures released by the National Statistical Office (NSO) show the state of employment in the organized sector. According to the latest figures, ESI's social security scheme had 8.87 lakh shareholders in June, 4.89 lakh in May and 2.63 lakh in April. It should be noted that the number of employees joining the ESIC scheme has increased with the release of the lockdown.
In July 2020, the total capitalization fell to 7.63 lakh. However, it increased to 9.5 lakh in August, 11.58 lakh in September and 12.6 lakh in October 2020. The government imposed a lockdown on March 25 last year to control the corona virus epidemic.
The number of shareholders joining ESI has crossed 1.5 crore
According to the NSO report, the total number of shareholders joining ESI in 2019-20 was 1.51 crore as against 1.49 crore in 2018-19. In September 2017, during March 2018, 83.35 lakh new shareholders joined the ESIC scheme. According to the report, a total of 4.63 crore shareholders joined ESIC between September 2017 and December 2020.

The report is based on the figures of ‘parole’ of people involved in various social security schemes run by ESIC, Employees Provident Fund Organization (EPFO) and Pension Fund Director as well as Development Authority (PFRDA). The statistics of this organization are being released from April 2018. This has been done for a period starting in September 2017.

According to the report, the number of shareholders who joined EPFO Satayai in pure form stood at 12.53 lakh in December as against 8.70 lakh in November. According to ANESO figures, a total of 3.94 crore new shareholders joined the Employees Provident Fund between September 2017 and December 2020.

The report, titled Employment Landscape December 2020 in the Organized Sector, states that since the number of shareholders is taken from a variety of sources, duplication is likely and estimates cannot be added. The report provides information on a variety of landscapes ranging from organized employment. But does not assess employment as a whole.
