'Cigarette smoking is harmful to health'. This is the kind of text we find in many places. But whether you smoke a cigarette or not, if you collect its filters, you will need an economic benefit, and at the same time, indirectly, you will preserve the environment. Naman Gupta, a young man from Noida in Uttar Pradesh, started a startup two years ago. In which he collects cigarette waste from all over India and makes things like mosquito repellent, key-chain, pillow, cushion and teddy bear from it. Naman Gupta's company Code Effort Pvt Ltd paid Rs 1 per kg for cigarette waste. Prices up to 800 pay. Code Effort is the only company in India to recycle cigarette waste.

For this we have appointed about 120 contract vendors who collect cigarette waste from leaf gullies, tea lorries or shops as well as smoking zones and deliver it to us. In return for this work, we paid them Rs. 10 to Rs. We pay 800 per kg.

Code Effort , which has collected more than 300 million cigarette filters so far , was launched in 2018 and has since collected and processed an estimated 300 million cigarette butts by December 2020. According to the company, one kg of cigarette waste is found when 2500-3000 cigarettes are smoked. States like Maharashtra, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu are more aware of this and that is why the highest collection is from there. According to Naman, only 50 per cent of the collection is available from these three states.

"The more we smoke, the more we benefit," said Naman, who also advises quitting smoking. But we don't want that to happen. This is why wherever we collect cigarette waste, we put up slogans related to de-addiction as well as posts and videos related to it on our social media accounts. We want the government to ban smoking.

Explaining how the idea came about 10 years after the cigarette filter was destroyed, Naman said, "When I was in college, some of my friends used to smoke cigarettes and throw their filters on the road." We also see cigarette butts on tea lorries or in public places. When I searched for its disposal, I came across several studies and found that this type of waste takes about 10 years to dispose of. Later, when I found out about its recycling, I found out that there is no mechanism for this in India. Even in developed nations like America, Europe there are very limited activities related to this. With this in mind, we came up with the idea that something like this should be done in India.
