Today the whole country is celebrating the 72nd Republic Day. 71 years ago, on this day in 1950, the Government of India Act 1935 was replaced by the Constitution of India. Thus the work of drafting the Constitution of India was completed on 26 November 1949.


Jana Gana Mana is the national anthem of India. It was originally composed as Bharoto Bhagyo Bidhata in Bengali by polymath Rabindranath Tagore. The first stanza of the song Bharoto Bhagyo Bidhata was adopted by the Constituent Assembly of India as the National Anthem on 24 January 1950.

It was also approved by the Constituent Assembly, but on 26 January 1930, the Congress adopted the slogan of complete self-government. After a two-month wait on his list, the last Governor-General of the country, C Rajagopalachari, declared the Republic of India on 26 January 1950. Then Dr. Rajendra Prasad was sworn in as President.

Republic Day is a national holiday in India. It honors the date on which the Constitution of India came into effect on 26 January 1950 replacing the Government of India Act (1935) as the governing document of India and thus, turning the nation into a newly formed republic.

In the first Republic Day celebrations, Rajendra Prasad waved the tricolor with a salute of 21 cannons and India was declared a complete republic. He gave speeches in both Hindi and English. Since then, January 26, Republic Day, has been celebrated as a national holiday.

In fact, the Government of India Act, 1935 determined the conduct of government in British India. It also gave rights to various princely states.

It is important to know that the India Independent Act 1947 was granted royal wages by the British Parliament on 18 July 1947. The law was intended to put into action the Mountbatten Plan, which was to divide India into two parts and give it independence.
